Copy of a notice of the Canton and Hongkong Merchants.

Now since republicanism is highly approved by all

nations, the Chinese Republic has been speedily established as the

result of the joint efforts of all the people of our country. The

recent centralization of the Republican Government and the union of

the five races under our Republic enjoy the universal support of

all friendly civilized nations, and in commerce there has existed

closer friendship between their people and ours than before.

Recently, however, the Electric Traction Company, regardless of

national friendship, has issued a notice discriminating against

Chinese Silver Coins and refusing to accept them, a step evidently

designed to cast a slur on our Republic and to repudiate friendship

with our people. Now since the company refuses to accept Chinese coins, that is to say, they reject our intercourse with them, there

-fore all of us should not fallow ourselves to be boycotted but

should refuse to travel by the company's trams. Anybody who permits

himself to be boycotted and travels by the tramway is no better that

a brute beast. Indeed all our fellow-countrymen should speedily

awake.

The whole commercial community of Canton and Hongkong.
